International Day of Sign Languages & Sign Language Day

September 23rd is International Day of Sign Languages & Sign Language Day.

This week marks International Deaf Awareness Week, with events illuminating cities across the nation with blue lights.

For the past three years, I have been attending sign language workshops and have received numerous requests from everyone regarding the location for the Blue Light event.

I approached every possible venue I could think of—tourist spots in Hino City, private companies, and more—repeatedly requesting their cooperation, but it proved difficult to make it happen.

However, as part of building momentum for this year’s Deaflympics, I made a request to the Fureai Hall. They kindly agreed to cooperate starting last year, and this year, the Blue Light has also been installed at the Nanpei Gymnasium.

The facility’s operating hours make it difficult to see the lights inside, but I am deeply grateful that we were able to realize one of the aspirations of those who use sign language as their language.

We were told that installation will be difficult starting next year.

However, there are many events that feature themed colors and light-ups, not just for sign language, but also for causes like diabetes and breast cancer.

Therefore, we will designate light spots in Hino City and work to create an environment where various awareness-raising activities can be conducted.
